Welcome to Nowhere by Caimh McDonnell

I received this as a birthday present last week and very welcome it was, too. You know where you stand with Caimh’s books. No matter what else arrived or failed to arrive that day, I knew that at least I had a quality book to read.

This one is all about an adventure that Smithy and Diller found themselves involved in. It’s really nice to see them in a solo book. They are strong enough characters to carry it without the presence of Bunny and this also means that my next encounter with him will be more of a treat.

The story is well written and no matter how bizarre the events being described, they are all perfectly logical within the context of the book. As always, people behave in a realistic fashion and their words and actions carry conviction.

This is another joy of a book and I’d not say no to seeing another book starring this pairing.

But Doctor, I AM a collection of comic strips by Paul Savage

This is a cracking book. Even before you open it, you are struck by the production values. It’s glossy and unlike many paperback, it feels as though it will still look as good as new for years to come.

But Doctor is a series of comic strips and there is definitely something for everyone in here. Especially, but not exclusively, if you like the jokes in Viz. If you do like Viz, then you’ll love this. The hit rate is very impressive and I found myself laughing out loud to a lot of the jokes.

The humour is quite surreal at times and that gives it a very creative slant which makes each strip nicely different in tone. With 85 pages there’s plenty to get your teeth into and in a nice touch, even the disclaimer is played for laughs.

This would make a splendid present for anyone who is difficult to buy for, but whom you wish to treat to something nice that they’ll really enjoy.
